Motivation
Next spring it is hoped that Bari City Council will light the fuse on the explosives set to demolish the buildings on Punta Perotti, around which there has developed a bitter legal battle over the last five years. The question that arises now is how to protect the site from building speculators and other unsuitable projects.
Project Area
Punta Perotti is located between the place where in AD 1087 the boat carrying the relics of San Nicola landed from Myra (in Lycia), and the Basilica di San Nicola that Abbot Elia began constructing immediately after to house the relics of the patron of the city. San Nicola continues to be important both in the Western Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches.
Project Theme
The vocation of Bari, a city destined to host the religious meeting between the believers from the East and West, suggests as a theme for the project:
a) a new Christian Orthodox Temple, that would close the perspective of the sea front promenade facing onto a grand piazza on the sea together with structures to host Orthodox clerics;
b) the completion of the sea front promenade as far as San Giorgio: a "via sacra" that would lead to San Nicola, making it possible to revive the ancient rite of procession along the sea shore.
