Motivation
The planned demolition of the buildings constructed next to the Latomie dei Cappuccini is an opportunity to re-think the architectonic and urban organization of the whole area, and re-establish the direct connection to the sea, in part compromised.
Project Area
The area concerned belongs to the Eastern-most part of a grand system stretching from the ancient Latomie dei Cappuccini to the Archaeological Park of Neapolis.
Project Theme
The programme identifies the following project themes:
a) architectonical redefinition of the space occupied by the buildings to be demolished with the possibility of creating a new structure, that will perform the dual functions of welcome centre and access to the latomie through a “Museum of the City of Siracusa”. The project may include the redesign of the surrounding area with particular attention to the direct connection between the latomie and the sea;
b) redesign of the external margins of the latomie and of the “Balza di Acradina” with the creation of a pedestrian walkway as well as areas for relaxation and socialising;
c) redesign of the current access to the latomie situated in Largo Latomie and on Via Politi Laudien.
